What is expanded polystyrene?

 

Expandable polystyrene refers to a polymer synthesized from a styrene monomer through a radical polycondensation reaction. It is a colorless and transparent heat-shrinkable plastic with a glass transition temperature higher than 100 degrees Celsius, so it is often used to make a variety of disposable containers that need to withstand the temperature of boiling water, and disposable foam lunch boxes.

Ordinary expandable polystyrene resin is an amorphous polymer. The random arrangement of polystyrene macromolecular chains with benzene rings as side groups and large volumes with benzene rings determines the physical and chemical properties of polystyrene, such as high transparency, high stiffness, high glass transition temperature, and brittleness. Expandable polystyrene is made of a low-boiling physical foaming agent impregnated in ordinary polystyrene. It is foamed by heat during processing and is specially used to make foam plastic products.
